fbrctl

NAME

fbrctl - administration tool for managing ProL2TP funnelbridge interfaces

SYNOPSIS

fbrctl [options] help|show|addbr|delbr

DESCRIPTION

The fbrctl tool can be used to create, destroy, and examine the state of funnelbridge interfaces.

OPTIONS

-h
Show usage synopsis.
-v
Verbose output. This option toggles the output of extra information when processing commands.

COMMANDS

fbrctl help command
Print a per-command usage synopsis.
fbrctl show funnelbridge
Prints information about the specified funnelbridge. Running in verbose mode will give more detailed output.
fbrctl addbr funnelbridge [with interface1 interface2 ...]
Create a new funnelbridge with the specified name, optionally adding one or more physical interfaces to the master bridge.
fbrctl delbr funnelbridge
Delete the funnelbridge with the specified name.

WHAT IS A FUNNELBRIDGE?

Standard Linux bridges have an interface limit of 1023. Funnelbridges allow this limit to be exceeded, by linking multiple standard bridges together with Virtual Ethernet (veth) links. Conceptually, you could think of this as wiring lots of hardware bridges together with CAT5e links.

Each funnelbridge consists of a number of components: a master bridge, one or more veth links, and one or more slave bridges.

The master bridge provides an interconnect to link all of the slave bridges. It also hosts any physical interfaces the adminstator wishes to have in the bridge.

The slave bridges are each linked to the master using veth connections, and host L2TP ethernet interfaces. ProL2TP's funnelbridge plugin is responsible for adding new L2TP interfaces into the slave bridges.

The following diagram describes the hierarchical structure of the funnelbridge:

+------------------+
| funnelbridge1 |
| Master | +-------------------+
|          mvef1s1 |<------->| svef1s1   Slave 1 |

ENVIRONMENT

In order to make use of a specific funnelbridge interface for ProL2TP L2TP sessions, the master funnelbridge interface must be created prior to creating the first L2TP session to be added to the bridge. Typically, fbrctl commands may be used during system initialisation before prol2tpd is executed.
